~Pendle Hill~

19th February 2010

Winter won't go away and I'll keep climbing Pendle Hill in the snowy conditions. It makes up for many of the recent mild winters when these opportunities didn't exist....

I carefully calculated a departure time from home to catch the sunset from the top of Pendle Hill. Here's a view from the road on the approach to Barley. It's 15/20 mins from home to the roadside and 30 mins walk to the top, an ascent of 750ft.

Ascent of Pendle Hill

The Ascent

The path follows the wall and then takes a diagonal route up the fell, quite steep all the way.

It's the end of half-term and I reckon some youngsters having been having fun.

Ah well, you can't win them all, as one good friend said when I reported the lack of sunset at the top. There is often a chance that the clear skies over East Lancashire do not extend to the coast and this is the case today. I suspected this would be the case as the clouds to the east were not the reddish/pink colour they would have been if the sunrays had a clear path.

One other sunset seeker had reached the top before me and I imagine he, too, was a little disappointed.

The Moon

Day 5 of the lunar cycle, where day 14 is the full moon, so two days to half-moon.
